Hybrid Electric Sail Boats

Most 60 ft. and above sailboats are equipped with both a diesel generator and auxiliary motor. Combining both functions, VPS designed a variable speed generator based on a commonly used marine diesel engine as well as the integration of an electric powertrain in the vessel. The generator and batteries are used for both propulsion and hotel loads allowing for silent assisted sailing and motor only cruising. The large capacity batteries offers extended fully autonomous hotel loads, making generator use less frequent. Furthermore, the power used by hotel loads being order of magnitude less than propulsion power requirements, therefore requiring barely more than generator idling speed, significantly limiting noise and vibration. Of course, the user can select the fast charge and use the full generator power to charge the batteries in no time.
